Didn't work on my mixed-texured hair.

I was not that impressed with the Hot Tools Pro Artist Protect & Style One-Step Detachable Dryer and Curler that I received for free as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel in exchange for providing a review. I'm mixed and have a few different textures and curl patterns so this might work better on less thick hair. The "comb" attachment tool is pretty much useless as it separates the hair only to dry the hair closest to the vent. It's not an actual comb attachment. I tried to try when my hair was both damp and towel dried, but both ways took ages and never felt truly dry. The curler attachment just didn't get hot enough for my hair, so it never curled completely or achieved that smooth look and feel. Each time I used the styler I had to supplement using either my regular blow dryer or flat iron. Super disappointed as I was hoping to finally find something that will cut down on my "get-ready time" and also bathroom storage clutter.

Not for me!

I was excited to try this 2-in-1 tool! The directions made it seem easy to use. However, this wasn't the case and this product is not for me. When I started using the comb attachment I wasn't really sure what it was actually doing to my hair. My hair is fine and wavy and it barely stayed in the comb. The barrel attachment didn't give great results either. The air would just blow half my hair out of the wand. I feel like you need three arms to use this product efficiently because you have to flip to the cool setting to set the curls after using the heated air. You're supposed to flip this switch all while holding the curl in the clip and it's really difficult to do. I wish this feature was an automatic setting or at minimum, a more accessible button by my fingers. The handle of it is really large… too large! I have small hands and it was difficult to hold in general. I think some of the brush attachments that are sold separately may have worked better than the ones included. I didn't have success trying it alone, so I went to my daughter's house to make sure it wasn't user error. She and I were able to completely dry my hair with the tool. Unfortunately, it took us over an hour to do what a similar look created with a traditional blow-dryer and curling iron would only take twenty minutes. The results didn't look great. I had more volume but my hair was puffy and I didn't get the nice full curls I was hoping for. The product packaging looks nice and I really the idea of the 2-in-1 tool, but I don't think I can recommend this. Thank you to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for giving me this hair tool to try!

Could be great… just maybe not for me!

I was very excited to receive this Hot Tools product and give it a go as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel! As someone with thick and wavy hair, I am always looking for a way to shorten my drying/styling morning routine. Unfortunately, I think my hair was just too thick for the product. Yes, the curls came out cute, but the amount of time it took nearly doubled my dry and curl time routine. I also felt that it could not take on that much hair at one time and do both things well…dry and curl. The attachment to help dry the roots wasn't that helpful. It seemed a bit too large to actually reach the roots (again, could just be a side effect of having thicker hair). However, I don't want to discount this product. I loved how lightweight it was. Therefore, I would definitely consider purchasing the round brush attachment in order to dry and style my hair. I have also had great success with Hot Tools products in the past, so I am confident in the quality of the tool. In the end, I just don't think it was the best choice for my hair type. If you have shorter, less thick hair, I'd say it's worth a shot!

Innovative Idea that Needs Work

The Hot Tools Pro Artist Protect & Style One-Step Detachable Dryer and Curler has a great concept, where curls are blown into hair, merging to steps of the styling process together. However, it is executed poorly. The tool lacks a means for securing hair while using the blow dryer attachment , so hair is constantly blowing out of it, creating a frizzy mess. I wish I could say that my experience with the curling attachment was any better, but the same issue exists there. As with a traditional curler, one frequently needs to open the clamp to slide more hair into the curling rod. Because there is air blowing through the attachment, lossening the clamp causes all hair to blow out. Furthermore, the "curl" this leaves is minimal, as you can see in my photo.

The tool is well built, feels sturdy, and has a aethetically pleasing design. I like that there are options for other attachments, decreasing the need for multiple separate tools. However, these features aren't enough to warrant a recommendation for this product unfortunately.

Overall, this is a beautiful and interesting design concept that falls flat in practice. I am grateful to Stellar Product Testing Panel for this opportunity to try this product for free.

Mixed bag of features

I was very curious to try this, as on paper it sounded like a product I might regularly use. I received one to try out through the Stellar Product Testing Panel.

The good: The comb-like concentrator attachment gave me great volume. Better than I've ever gotten with other tools, or a regular blow dryer and brush system.

The bad: Everything was cumbersome to use — particularly the curling attachment. I never managed to get great curls all the way around my head with it (and the barrel got so hot so fast, even after adjusting it — too much power for my fine, wavy hair). While I loved the volume I got from the concentrator attachment, it took much longer to dry my hair than with other methods. Even with the good result, I don't think it would be worth the money or the space for me to keep this product on hand. I'd rather get a professional blowout on the rare occasions I'm going glam, and use my faster tools for casual styling. I do think there is probably a subset of the population that could do a lot with a tool like this, but they are no doubt more coordinated and willing to spend time styling their hair than I am.

Limits Styling Options

I was given this hair tool to try as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel. I will start out with the fact that I love the concept of this product. There's been several times since receiving this curler that I thought, "how great it would be to jump straight to curling!" after towel drying my hair. But there's a few ways that I feel limited in using this product. I have somewhat low porosity hair, that has texture and is far from straight. I found that when using this product, I'm essentially trying to curl over my already wavy textured hair...rather than curling straight hair after blow-drying. It just didn't work and the end result was not a clean curl. Also, when I curl my hair I'm not curling all the way to the ends. I curl the middle of the lock of hair, leaving an inch or two of the bottom of the lock uncurled, to then comb out to beach waves. This curler doesn't allow for that, or else you're leaving the ends of your hair still wet. Lastly, I found the root dryer to be difficult to use with my hair texture. It was hard to use it as intended without ending up with frizzy hair.

I do like that the product has several different heat settings, and the settings aren't positioned in a way that they will get accidentally pressed or turned off mid styling. Overall, this curler is not a great option for me, but I could see it being great for those with stick straight hair.

Not for me

I had the opportunity to use this product thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel. It is very nice to look at and I love the box for storage. I was initially excited to try it out as my hair dryer recently broke. However, I did not care for the weight and shape of this dryer. I didn't have much luck with the curls and actually dropped the tool while styling my hair. I ended up pulling out my regular curling iron to finish the job. I've used the tool since but mostly just as a dryer without trying to curl. It isn't really for me since most of the time I shower at night and let my hair dry over night. I do love that it is better for my hair than other tools on the market. I was able to get a couple nice curls when I switched it to cool to set. I think I just need some more practice with it.

Great idea but lacks results

Upon receiving this item I was excited the idea behind it seemed really convenient for a mom of 2 such as myself. The packaging was nice and the setup was easy. I received this item through the Stellar product testing panel and while I found a few things I liked there were mostly problems. The problems are within the tools themselves. The comb attachment is too large and the teeth are too far apart. I have fine hair and my hair just slipped right through so I never got the volume I wanted from it. The curling attachment seems like a great idea but my hair would often get caught in the wand. Small sections were needed and your hair does not get a curl like you would a curling iron. Overall the process took longer than if I blow dried my hair and curled it with a curling iron. I would consider taking it traveling mostly because it's smaller than my blow dryer but it's definitely not an item I would use regularly.

Didn't work for my hair…

I received this product through the Stellar Product Testing panel. I didn't feel like this product is something that was effective for my hair type. I have long (lower mid back length) thin, straight hair that tends to be frizzy. Even with a curling iron, my hair struggles to stay curled for a long while, the only method I have found that is the most effective is curling using a straightening iron. Usually, I can blow dry my hair in 10 mins and then take another 20 mins to curl. I felt like this tool took much longer to style my hair as it's more a dryer that's meant to assist with curling. When I used it, I took about 30 mins to air dry my hair, then another 45 mins to dry/style with this tool. It wasn't very complex to use as the barrel is similar to a curling iron and the root dryer is self explanatory to use. However, my curls were no different than when using a curling iron/hair straightener and had completely disappeared in the morning (I used this tool at night) and portions of my hair still felt damp even after air drying and using the tool. Overall, my favorite feature was the root fryer/volumizer as I felt it did provide some volume to my hair; however, I do not see myself using this tool much in the future as it just took too long and didn't provide exceptional results for me. I would probably recommend this tool to someone who has thin, but curly hair as I think it would assist them in styling their curls more.

Great concept, but didn't work for me

I was so excited to try out this dryer and curler tool because I style my hair regularly and am always looking for ways to make that process more efficient. My hair is long and naturally curly, and typically holds styles well. The first time I used this tool I was impressed with the quality of the materials and the thoughtful placement of the controls near the base. The swivel cord is also amazing so you don't have to worry about getting tangled! The first time I used it I briefly towel-dried my hair and went straight to the curler attachment in an attempt to dry and style it at the same time. The curler is very loud and very hot, even on the low setting. It took quite a while to get each section of hair dried and curled, but in the end, I got tons of volume and tight curls. The downside is I also got tons of frizz with all the hot air being blasted on my hair. The next time I used it, I used the root concentrator attachment in a combing motion to get my hair 90% dry before trying to curl it. When I used the curling attachment on mostly-dry hair I got looser curls and less volume. Still a lot of frizz though. The best way to use this seems to be to dry sections with the root concentrator until it's about 60% dry, then use the curler to finish drying and curling. While that is the best outcome, it still leaves my hair frizzy and the style doesn't last as long as when I use a traditional curling iron. I find myself having to spend more time drying and styling using this tool compared to using a blow dryer and curling iron, and after a couple of hours, I have to use a curling iron anyway since the curls have fallen flat. If this tool was able to give me sleek curls that last, it would get 5 stars. Unfortunately, the amount of frizz and weak curls don't work for me. I received this product as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel.

A Great Idea, But Falls Short of the Mark

I was excited to try the Hot Tools Pro Artist Protect & Style One-Step Detachable Dryer and Curler as I am always looking for ways to shorten my morning routine. It is an innovative idea; a hair-drying tool that curls your hair during the drying process. I was hoping to cut significant time off of my morning routine by drying and curling my hair at the same time.

I unfortunately was disappointed. The process entails using the brush attachment to dry the roots of your hair, then curl each section of the lengths of your hair until they are dry, so it's really still a two-step process. It also takes a long time to dry the length of your hair while it's wrapped around the curling barrel. I don't think this product saved me any time. On top of that, the dryer is less effective than a standard blow dryer since the air is being pushed out between the slats of the brush attachment and not coming out in one concentrated stream. It's also awkward to use the brush attachment while trying to dry the roots.

In summary, I love the time-saving idea of this product, but it just didn't deliver on that promise for me. I did enjoy testing out a new hair styling product, however. Thanks to the Stellar Product Testing Panel for the opportunity.

I wished I liked it more

I was given the Hot tools pro artist protect and style one step detachable dryer and curler by the stellar product testing panel. I am a mom of two (4 years old and 11months) so I am very short on time. I usually use a flat iron or a curl wand. I do have thicker wavy textured hair. So I will style at night and do touch ups in the am. There is an attachment to blow dry it. It's a very bulky hair styling tool in my opinion. I have average hands and found it hard to get a comfortable grasp on it while trying to style my hair. Another issue I had with this product is its very loud. Other blow dry styling products I have used you can turn the air off. This one however seems you can't. It's LOUD. Especially when it's sitting next to your ear for 30 sec or more to curl your hair. Maybe it's because I don't style my hair with a blow dry but it seems so loud. Due to my hair texture and thickness you have to have it on the med to high setting which is louder. I was impressed by how quickly it did heat up. I didn't like the curls it made though. They didn't stay very long.

I didn't really care for this product. For someone who needs to style their hair at night after their kids are sleeping I don't think this would be the product for you. Again maybe if you are used to styling your hair with a blow dryer this would work better for you than it did me.

Thank you stellar panel for having me test this product!

Time Consuming on Thick Hair

I was optimistic about the tool and was excited to try out the cooling function. It seems like it could also save valuable space if you are packing and need a dryer and a curler. Since I style my hair often, I'm looking for ways to minimize heat damage. Unfortunately, the tool is time consuming since I had to dry my hair partially in order to use the curling function. The teeth of the drying attaching are very wide and don't go through hair easily unless you pull the hair away from your head, and even then, it's hard to get it close to your roots.

I moved onto the curling/drying attachment with my hair partially wet. The tool did curl my hair. However, it was a very long process. For each piece of hair, I had to clamp the tool on my hair, roll it upward, then reach down to the barrel of the tool to twist it with my other hand to turn on the heat. Then to cool it, I had to reach down again to turn it to cool. Then turn it off and release the hair. It's very awkward placement for switching between the functions, and the cooling function doesn't really work, since your hair is still wrapped around the metal barrel that remains hot.

Overall, this was not for me. Perhaps if you have thinner hair and are not concerned about using the cooling function, this might be a good fit. It's not overly expensive so it could be worth giving a try, but I'll have to stick to using my dryer and curling iron separately for now. I received the product free as part of a testing panel, but if you can get it to work for you, it seems like a good price point.

Not a big fan - no ideal curls

I was super excited about receiving this 2 in 1 curler in the mail from the Stellar Product Testing Panel. I love curling my hair and thought it would be a convenient and quick tool to speed up the process of curling my hair. Upon first receiving it i thought it would be simple easy to see and the instructions seemed basic. I tried it a few times within the first week and just couldn't get the hang of it or achieve the curls i wanted. I read more on the use of it and tried again and was still not able to achieve curls that I could wear out. The blow dry portion in this is very neat however it gets extremely hot when curling and makes it nearly impossible to do while drying/curling. I also am one to spend nearly 30 minutes max curling my hair and this tool seemed to take much longer. My hair was left frizzy and i was very underwhelmed. My favorite overall feature was the 2 in 1 blow drying feature however when i wasn't able to achieve the curls I wanted I decided using my normal curling iron will probably be the way to go. I've tried this different ways probably 10 different times and just can't get the curls I want. My hair tends to hold curl VERY well but this just want not the product for me.
