SPF
This product is advertised on multiple sites (not just Ulta) for being SPF30.
But the packaging does not advertise anywhere about sun protection and neither does the physicians formula website.
However, the powder lists two sunscreens in its ingredients- zinc oxide (second ingredient) and titanium dioxide (last ingredient).
It is suspicious.
I end up using a face suncreen face spray then use this powder on top.
+Good for oily skin
-Needs more shades
-Terrible brush
Not actually SPF 30?
I use the other Physician's Formula mineral powder that features an SPF of 16, so I was excited to try this product because the Ulta app said it is SPF 30. Now that I have picked up my purchase neither the paper packaging nor the plastic packaging of the product says anything about SPF 30. It does contain zinc oxide, but it is one of the last ingredients and is not described as an active ingredient. The Ulta app shows the product as containing SPF 30, but the product itself does not. Also the translucent shade is cery much pigmented.
Don't know what I'd do without this product
I have very sensitive, oily, breakout-prone skin and on top of that I am extremely pale with yellow undertones. I have used so many different kinds of mineral makeup and they either break me out, make me look greasy within an hour, accentuate the texture of my skin, make my pores look huge, or the lightest shade is still too dark, too pink, or too orange.
The translucent shade matches me perfectly. No more orange or pink face with my white/yellow neck. Besides the relieving color match this stuff makes my skin look airbrushed. It is the only powder that has successfully blurred the large pores on my nose. The coverage is phenomenal and I use this alone as my foundation. I was worried about the lauroyl lysine breaking me out but no breakouts, no irritation, no itching. Also for some people saying this doesn't work well for them try to make sure your skin is properly primed. I first used this on bare skin and hated how it looked and almost tossed it but after that I made sure I was moisturized and wore a primer and the result was a complete 180.
It Gave Me an Allergic Reaction
Contains Chlorphenesin (a synthetic preservative), which I've since learned causes allergic contact dermatitis in some individuals, such as myself. Not a fun experience and I do not recommend this product to anyone who has sensitive skin or is prone to eczema or contact dermatitis. This has been my first experience with such a thing, and I never wish to repeat it.
Shade: beige
This product is exactly what I was looking for: a pressed powder that's talc-free and has SPF. I don't typically wear foundation so I was looking for something to apply lightly over moisturizer or SPF to get rid of shine while adding extra sun protection.
I was unsure if the translucent or creamy natural shades would fit me, so I searched for swatches and found that it comes in a third shade currently not sold at Ulta, which is beige. Based on swatches and reviews, translucent would definitely be too fair for me. Of the slightly darker shades, creamy natural has pink undertones while beige has neutral/olive undertones. Beige matches me perfectly. For reference, I have light-medium East Asian skin with olive undertones.
After reading reviews about the brush (lots of fallout and uneven, inefficient application), I didn't even bother with it and used a cosmetic sponge instead. This worked great. It has buildable coverage, though naturally the more layers you use the more likely you'll look cakey. With one layer pressed on gently with the sponge plus going over some smaller areas a second time, the finish was great. Got rid of the shine like I'd hoped without being too intensely mattifying and drying. Blush and highlight applied nicely over top as well. Fragrance in cosmetics is something I avoid, but I find the scent of this product to be mild. I can only smell it straight from the pan up close, not while applying at all. Also, it didn't oxidize on me after applying, but I haven't worn it for a full day yet, so I can't comment on how it stands up over time with sweat or oil build up. I checked my skin in sunlight and took photos with flash on and did not see any white cast or flashback.
If you are light-medium to medium with warm undertones, consider looking elsewhere for this in beige! However, even with this third color, I consider the shade range of this product to be abysmal. I got lucky having one of them match so well. Sometimes I feel like brands forget that darker skin tones exist and need sun protection too. I really hate when brands cater to such a narrow range of the population.
Lastly I want to mention that powder sunscreens aren't really reliable for full coverage sun protection. That's not a fault specific to this product, just the nature of powder SPF in general. Whether that matters to you depends on your sun protection needs. Personally, I would not use this alone for prolonged direct sun exposure.
Best powder ever!!
I absolutely love this stuff!! I use it as a foundation....with no concealer and my skin looks amazing. Strangers often stop me to tell me my skin is so pretty...it's Physician's Formula! I own a ton of high end makeup but, it's this that gets me the most compliments! I use mineral wear in translucent, mineral wear in beige for a bronzer, butter glow powder in translucent (gives me a softer glow-y face) mineral pearls in translucent for a highlighter, and mood boosting blush in natural. I apply with a flat top powder brush and use a setting spray to finish. Also, being fair skinned, I love that it has spf built in.
A Forever Standby product
I wore this for a couple of years and recently returned to it after trying out other brands. The ingredients are minimal and clean. Yet, the product is similar in coverage and quality to MAC StudioFix powder foundation. I like this way, way more than it Cosmetics, another clean brand I tried. Coverage is buildable and looks dewy and natural. I apply with a Kabuki brush.
It's a mess
First of all, translucent is actually ivory. Secondly, it smears and cakes very badly. I've tried with and without a primer and it doesn't matter. It's easy to over apply so I'll have to blot off excess. The only redeeming quality is the sunscreen which is why I bought it in the first place. Kind of the worst
Physicians formula is a
Physicians formula is a great brand. Drugstore option that is not too expensive.. Feels very high quality. Be. I like the fact that the ingredients do not include talc. Theres a nice sized morror included with a brush. Another, Bonus about this product is it can be used as a setting powder or also as a light coverage foundation.
White cast
I'm on the medium to tan skin tone range and this was a definite no for me. I purchased this in translucent but was disappointed that as soon as I applied there was a white cast. As others have mentioned the texture is smooth and finely milled and therefore seems like it will crack or break in the pan easily.
